The Czars 1994年成立于科罗拉多州的丹佛。主唱John Grant和贝斯手Chris Pearson在丹佛市中心红灯区的一家酒吧里相遇，尔后鼓手，混迹于老梅恩剧院的小巷之中的Jeff Linsenmaier第二年加入乐队。吉他手Andy Monley和Roger Green分别在1997年和1999年被招入。The Czars在自己的厂牌Velveteen下发行过两张专辑，Moodswing和The La Brea Tar Pits of Routine，之后，他们先后签约到Cocteau Twins的Bella Union London-based Record和美国的Manifesto Records厂牌下。Before...but longer是他们在Cocteau Twins的厂牌下的第一张唱片，2000年五月发行。The Ugly People vs.The Beautiful People在2001年10月发行。下一张专辑计划在2004年5月发行。
