　　洪江古商城坐落在沅水、巫水汇合处，它起源于春秋，成形于盛唐，鼎盛于明清，以集散桐油、木材、白腊、鸦片而闻名，是滇、黔、桂、湘、蜀五省地区的物资集散地，是湘西南地区经济、文化、宗教中心，素有“湘西明珠”、“小南京”、“西南大都会”之美称。如今据专家考证，现仍保存完好的洪江古商城的明、清古建筑，如窨子屋、寺院、镖局、钱庄、商号、洋行、作坊、店铺、客栈、青楼、报社、烟馆等共380多栋，总面积约20万平方米。
